A Hat Bigger Than Their Differences: Trump and Melania
Washington. – President Donald Trump was unable to kiss his wife, Melania, during the inauguration ceremony held Monday inside the Capitol, all because he encountered the firm brim of the hat worn by the new U.S. First Lady, one of the most stylish elements of the event.
The hat, designed by Eric Javits, was black with a white band attached to the brim. It covered Melania's eyes and nearly half her face, becoming the most talked-about fashion statement on a January day dominated by sober attire and uncovered heads.
Melania stood next to her son Barron, by far the tallest of all the guests, making no effort to adjust her hat to reveal her eyes.
When her husband entered the room to a loud ovation, Trump first approached his wife to kiss her on the cheek but was thwarted by the firm brim of her hat.
Melania, unflappable, remained still, and Trump's kiss lingered in the air, never reaching its destination.
