(CNN Español) - Este es el Top 10 de las mejores películas de 2016. Como siempre, no es un conteo que pretenda pronosticar ganadores de esta temporada de premios aquí en Hollywood. Es simplemente el listado de las películas que por uno o varios motivos me hicieron seguir creyendo en el lenguaje extraordinario del cine.

 

10. The Neon Demon

La película número 10, recuerdo, no fue muy bien recibida por la crítica, pero como cinta de "terror" y de gran carga "camp", me pareció el mejor placer culposo de todo el 2016.

9. Desde allá

¡Otro año de grandes películas iberoamericanas! En el caso de la venezolana Desde allá. Se trata de un elegante y agudo debut del director Lorenzo Vigas. Son tantos los temas que aborda esta cinta que categorizarla con una sola etiqueta de género no le haría justicia. Gracias Alfredo Castro y Luis Silva por exponer tanta vulnerabilidad a través de sus personajes.

8. Jackie

Pablo Larraín es uno de los directores más versátiles y completos de Iberoamérica. Estuvo el año pasado en mi #TopTen y en 2016 vuelve a estarlo. Hollywood ya le echó el ojo con Jackie y su protagonista, Natalie Portman, puede ir preparando su discurso de aceptación para el Globo de Oro, los premios SAG, el Oscar, etc.

7. Aquarius

Sonia Braga mejor que nunca y Kleber Mendonça Filho convertido en uno de mis nuevos directores favoritos. ¡Supremo dominio de la tensión!

6. Lion

Lion fue la última película que pude ver en el 2016 y qué bueno que lo hice pues me habría perdido de incluir una de las más conmovedoras del año. Es una cinta que demuestra el poder de una buena historia y que a veces no se necesitan modernos niveles de producción, ingeniosos trucos narrativos o grandes estrellas de cine (aunque aquí tienen a Kidman en un papel secundario) para atraer al público. Aquí solo bastó un desafortunado incidente y un tierno protagonista para llegarnos al corazón. Algunos amigos me han dicho que lloraron viendo La La Land... no me los imagino viendo Lion.

5. Moonlight

Moonlight es lo que Boyhood quiso ser pero no pudo.

4. La La Land

No tiene el frenesí de Moulin Rouge, tampoco la espectacularidad de Chicago o la magia de Singin' in the Rain, pero como un musical de nuestra era, sirve quizá para impulsar el renacimiento pleno del género. Arrancó de forma contundente y termina de igual manera pero en el medio pierde fuerza. A quienes vivimos en Los Ángeles nos parece una película tan local pero a los soñadores una universal. Quisiera que hubiese sido mi #1 pero me quedó debiendo. Aún así, repetiría muchas veces su secuencia inicial.

3. Arrival

Nuevamente los extraterrestres llegan a la Tierra y sus intenciones no son claras. El planeta se siente amenazado y comienza a actuar basado en el miedo. Lo único que nos salvará es un humano libre de prejuicios y lleno de empatía. En tiempos de desolación, necesitamos más personajes como el de Amy Adams. Presten atención a aspectos como su fotografía y banda. Maravillosa en muchos sentidos.

2. Manchester by the Sea

El drama familiar por excelencia y contado con sutil elegancia y algunas dosis de crudo humor. Una revelación en el medio de la historia que nos permite conectar aún más con sus protagonistas. Momentos de dura honestidad que se convierten en espejo para quienes han pasado por la aflicción y la reconciliación.
